When you break your computer down to its bare essentials, it has two main parts: hardware and software. An operating system is the main software that your computer uses to run programs. You’ve probably heard of Windows — in fact, you’re probably reading this from a computer that uses Windows, since there are 400 – 800 million people using Windows, or some 90% of computer users worldwide.
But did you know that there were other operating systems, too?
Both of the most popular operating system has advantages and disadvantages.
Key Considerations
For most people, what operating system they use comes down to their personal preferences. But there are other considerations as well.
If you’re thinking about exploring other operating systems, ask yourself these questions:
- What am I trying to accomplish with this machine?
- How important is safety to me?
- What programs do I want to run on this machine?
- What’s my budget?
With that in mind, let’s take a look.
Windows 10
Windows 10 is the latest release from Microsoft. As stated, it’s also the most popular and runs on the majority of machines. Windows 10 keeps most consumers happy — it’s easy to navigate, compatible with most programs, and fairly secure. Since Windows 10 is a recent release (it dropped in 2015), Microsoft continues to release updates and patches.
However, it does have some characteristics that people don’t like. For example, it comes installed with a lot of “bloatware,” or useless programs that most people don’t use, like the game store. There are also some issues with sluggish performance.
Characteristics
- Popular, so most users are familiar
- Flexible — can run on many kinds of machines
- Compatible with many business programs, including Excel and Access
- Runs on most machines
- A little sluggish, but dependable
MacOS
MacOS, the operating system that runs on Apple products, is Windows’ biggest competitor. While it might not seem to have much market-share, Apple nonetheless has many fans. It’s important to note here that, unlike Windows, which runs on most brands of computers, MacOS only runs well on Apple products.
And Apple products have a hefty price tag. While many argue that Mac machines are overpriced, others argue that you’re paying more for performance. Indeed, Mac products are speedy. But more importantly, there are a wide variety of art programs, music creation tools, and the like that only run on Apple products. That’s why Apple has such a strong reputation among the creative crowd.
Characteristics
- The second most-popular OS, with a dedicated fan base
- Runs quickly on Apple-native machines
- Less compatible with business programs, but offers a wide variety of creation tools
- Expensive — prepare to drop some serious cash
The Bottom Line
Which operating system you choose depends primarily on your needs. If your business relies on Microsoft-native platforms like Excel and Access, and features a wide variety of machines, Windows is going to be your best bet. But for the creative side of things, like marketing consultants or video-makers, Apple products may be better.
