Beothurtreed, just like Grandma used to make!
No, that is not a typo.
While we may have been able to utilize AI to program robots to accomplish food service tasks like serving, flipping burgers, and making lattes their culinary skills have a lot to be desired.
Janelle Shane, an optics research scientist, and AI researcher one day wondered if she could use the power of AI to create some fantastic recipes. After feeding her program over 30,000 recipes from top rated cookbooks, she awaited the results. Let us just say, if a computer invites you to dinner, it would probably be advantageous to decline.
One such recipe was entitled ‘Beothurtreed’ and consists of the following:
- ‘1 Hard cooked apple mayonnaise’
- ‘5 cups lumps; thinly sliced’
- ‘Surround with 1 ½ dozen heavy water by high, and drain & cut ¼ inch remaining the skillet’
We think it is safe to say that the Michelin star chefs can wipe the sweat from their brow, AI is not coming for them just yet!

Just your average, run-of-the-mill nightmare machine.
Most of us probably cannot imagine waking up one morning with the idea to create an algorithm that produces terror. However, a group of students at MIT did!
Introducing The Nightmare Machine. The project began in 2016 with the question ‘Can machines learn to scare us?’ Using deep learning algorithms and ‘evil spirits’ the media lab team at MIT created ‘Haunted Places’ and ‘Haunted Faces’.

A bleak outlook for some.
All jokes aside, there are some who feel AI’s potential is only outmatched by its possibility for catastrophe.
There is a hypothetical theory referred to as ‘AI singularity’ in which AI itself surpasses human intelligence. At this point, some believe humanity will have ushered itself into the apocalypse and become subject to the very intelligence they created.
While still a frightening possibility, who’s to say we won’t reach that point in harmony with AI instead of as adversaries?
